We had Back-2-School night tonight.  This was definitely a first where more than half of my student’s parents actually showed up.  I have to say that I’d rather have over-bearing parents who care too much about their kids than parents who are non-existent and don’t give a crap about their kids (aka majority of the parents of my students back in Lawndale).

…of school left but who’s counting?

As much as I love my profession, the beginning of the school year is always a pain in the a$$. I love being a teacher because I love teaching but nowadays, it feels as if I’m spending most of my time and energy on paperwork, legal IEP documents and the politics of work.

Summer is officially over!

I have survived my first day of being a teacher in the New York City public schools system. Though I practically lived at school today (a whole whopping 12 hours), I feel overwhelmed that this is for reals. The two years of planning, making the pain-in-the-ass move out here, feelings of homesickness have all been worth it. I am now an official, honest-to-goodness, working resident of this amazing city.
